Retrospective study

Level-one pediatric trauma center

Summary:

This study investigates the incidence of skin reactions following Dermabond (a skin adhesive) application in pediatric orthopedic surgeries and explores risk factors for Dermabond sensitivity in children.

Methods:

A retrospective analysis of 2990 surgeries performed in 2019 at a level-one pediatric trauma center. Three surgeons were selected based on their high rates of Dermabond application. Skin reactions and repeat Dermabond exposures were analyzed.

Exclusions:

Patients with known allergies to Dermabond were excluded.

Results:

14% (32/234) of patients experienced skin reactions, including erythema (31%) and itchiness (31%). 12% of patients with a single Dermabond exposure had reactions, compared to 21% of patients with repeat exposure (P=0.03). No significant correlation was found between age, surgical procedure, or surgical location and sensitivity.

Conclusions:

Skin sensitivity to Dermabond occurred more frequently in pediatric patients than in adults, with repeat exposure significantly increasing the risk of reactions. Awareness of this potential complication is important for decision-making regarding Dermabond use in pediatric orthopedic surgeries.
