Summary:

This study examines the two-year patient-reported outcomes (PROs) for adolescent patients aged 16 or younger who underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). It also explores the rates of reinjury, reoperation, and return to sport (RTS) among these patients.

Methods:

The study used a query from the institutional PRO database for patients who had ACLR between 2009 and 2020. Outcomes measured included the Single Assessment Numerical Evaluation (SANE) and Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) at 2 years. Secondary outcomes included reinjury, reoperation rates, and time to RTS.

Exclusions:

Patients over 16 years old, revision procedures, patients with concomitant ligament repairs/reconstructions, and patients missing full outcome data at 2 years.

Results:

Return to Sport: 90% of patients returned to sport with an average time of 8.7 months (range: 4.8 to 24.0 months). Reinjury: 23.5% experienced reinjury, and 24.5% underwent reoperation. KOOS and SANE Scores: Mean scores were 87.1 and 89.1 at 2 years, with improvements of +18.4 and +22.9, respectively. Reinjury and Reoperation Impact: Reinjury and reoperation slightly reduced PRO scores, but differences did not reach statistical significance. Timing of RTS and Reinjury: No direct correlation was found between the timing of RTS and reinjury, though those who returned between 9.5 and 13.7 months had fewer reinjuries.

Conclusions:

Despite relatively high rates of reinjury and reoperation, adolescent patients experienced significant improvements in PRO scores following ACLR. The study emphasizes the need for counseling regarding the risk of further knee injuries after surgery.
